Sonia and Jason’s Story

Jason and I were married in 2004 and began trying for a baby a year later. We did several rounds of IVF and artificial insemination in Canberra but with no luck.

By 2012, I’d had 10 miscarriages, ranging from 8-12 weeks. It was a very horrid and painful time. I used to cry myself to sleep thinking of my poor little angels who I would never hold or touch. To me, my miscarried babies were little human beings, even though they were only a few weeks old.

After so many disappointments, a friend recommended I see a doctor in Sydney, who in turn advised me to see Dr Gavin Sacks. Dr Sacks discovered I had a chromosome disorder and only a 1 in 1000 chance of falling pregnant naturally. He also found that I had several large fibroids, which he removed in early 2010. We then tried two more rounds of IVF but they didn’t work.

Jason and I had almost given up hope  – so when I found I was seven weeks pregnant – I could hardly believe it. I thought I’d missed my period because I was so stressed.  During my pregnancy I was constantly worried about miscarrying. At 29 weeks I went into pre-term labour but fortunately the doctors and nurses were able to stop the labour. I had Alex on the 24 April 2013 via caesarean section.

After Alex was born, I had a brain seizure and was in ICU for five days and then had to be admitted to Hyson Green for post-traumatic stress and post-natal depression. I was there for four weeks. I went home at the beginning of June 2013.

Words cannot describe how thankful we are to Dr Sacks.  Jason and I call him ‘God’ because he was our miracle worker.

My dream is to write a book called ‘Ten White Balloons and a Miracle’.

I am not saying I am a doctor or pretend to know what other women are experiencing but I have been through a lot to have a baby and would like to inspire others not to give up hope.

We are forever grateful to Dr Gavin Sacks.
